Where the Wild Things Edit

Hi, I’m Rae! For supplemental income, I edit. My costs are low, and I take my job very seriously.

I like oddities, stones, and creepy creatures. Also, I’m part goblin—I’m sure of it. My absolute favorite thing to do when I have a friend to go with is to go deep into the woods and look for bones and things. If I could, I would have a crow friend. Not one to cage, but a free crow who I give treats to in exchange for crow confetti.

When I’m unable to leave the house (which is most of the time), I like to sculpt creatures and decorate them with moss and crystals. If I had to describe the vibe I’m going for, I’d say it is creepy-whimsy or creepy-cozy. At least, that’s what I’m going for in my stories.

I write whenever I get the chance, but my disabilities limit my productivity. Because of this, I try to be as efficient in my planning as possible. I’ve been focusing on my KidLit journey, which if you’re curious about, I keep a daily* diary under “Thistle in the Fog” on WordPress. (There’s also a lot about my pets haha.)

My pen name is Thistle Ramey, and one day, I hope to be published somewhere that can give me a found-family vibe. The dream, right? I am so close to querying, and the excitement is building. Throughout this process, I have learned that it’s not just about the book’s contents but how you sell it. I’m currently refining my query package in preparation.

Writing, for me, is therapeutic. I take something (bad or good) that has happened to me, and I re-sculpt it into a work of art. Of course, in my life, I’ve lived many stories. Raven with a Rorschach shows a journey through psychosis and finding hope at the end, all with a creepy Alice in Wonderland whimsy. My main issue is finding a comp for it because it has psychological horror elements merged with this vibrantly colored imagery and fantasy. There’s a book called, Don’t Let the Forest In, that I’d like to read. I have a feeling it might work as one. (I have comps now yay!)

My next WIP is a picture book called Ofelia and the Dust Faeries about friendship, making amends, and taking responsibility for your own actions. It’s about my kitten, Ofelia, who has caught a dust faerie and must go on an adventure to make it right.

As I work on the illustrations for the picture book, I am also writing a Little Red Riding Hood reimagining. It’s a tribute to the long line of storytellers in my family on my mom’s side, but it’s creepy-cozy. I’m intending this for younger YA (13-15yo). And like most of my stories, it will have a happily ever after.
